They call me Jesus …

Late nineties. Black and white pencil, ink wash and biro on cartridge paper.

Browsing through the archive looking for something to stick up (it has been a while, after all), I came across this. I only have vague memories of producing it. I think it was probably initially an idea for the first page of a comic, but I have no idea what the plot might have been. To be honest, I doubt I got that far, but thought the image and caption worked rather well together. Which I still sort of think they do. At this point I had the one pot of ink I have ver owned and was ‘experimenting’ with that. These experiments rarely actually involved drawing with the brushes, just colouring in the areas I wanted to be black that previously wiped out my thick fibre tips. I was trying to do quite a few noirish things at this point (presumably after reading Sin City), so was getting through a fair amount of black. It might also have been one of the few occasions I managed to use the white pencil that had somehow come into my posession. I must have got bored with this particular sketch quite quickly though. If you look closely you’ll notice that I haven’t even bothered to erase any of the pencilling and, even more obviously, that I haven’t even bothered inking in the street lamp or the walls behind it. Or sorting out the splodges of white in the middle of the shadow. Well I’m not going to start touching it up now, I quite like it. So there.

Beware large apostrophes, my bretheren. They are seldom securely attached to tall buildings.
